TEXTURE OF LAMU
By Baard IS Tofting Løtvedt

A wall, an opening – and a story that stretches back in time.

"Texture of Lamu" is a meditative photograph from a time when silence was enforced. When the pandemic shut down the world, so did the pulse of Lamu – the isolated, Muslim-dominated island with its 23 mosques and ancient Swahili culture. An entire community was left standing against the wind.

This abandoned house, worn by years of wind, salt and sun, becomes a kind of archive – a physical memory. The window reveals a spatial and visual repetition – like peering into the layered architecture of time. The traces in the plaster read like a manuscript of a life lived, fragile but tenacious.

Baard's work with textures and time is as much painterly as it is documentary, inviting the viewer to not only see, but to listen to what has been.
