Braided changing table/serving tray from Ghana. These serving trays are made by the local Gurus, also known as the Frafra people who live in northern parts of Ghana. This is a craft area and the braiding tradition has been passed down for generations. It is mostly the women who braid the trays and selling them is an important additional income alongside agriculture. Crops often fail due to poor soil quality, heavy rainfall that erodes the soil and generally poor growing conditions. The women collect veta vera straw. The straws are split, then rolled against the thigh into a tight twist. The straws are then collected and dyed in boiling water. The basket is braided from the bottom up and finished by tying the straws to a round edge. Handles are made in many varieties and often with leather details. A woman normally braids one tray in three days.
