The authentic Bolga baskets are handmade by the local Gurune, also known as the Frafra people, who live in the northern parts of Ghana. This area has a rich craft tradition, and the art of weaving has been passed down through generations. It is mainly the women who are responsible for weaving the baskets, and the sale of them constitutes an important additional income in addition to agriculture. Due to poor soil quality, heavy rains that erode the soil and generally challenging growing conditions, the women often experience poor harvests.
The women collect the straws from the veta vera plant, also known as elephant grass. These straws are split and then twisted tightly against the thigh to create strong braided threads. The straws are then gathered and dyed in boiling water. The baskets are braided from the bottom up, finishing by tying the straws to form a round edge. The handles vary in design and often include leather details.
A woman can usually complete a basket in three days, but more intricate shapes and patterns can take twice as long.
Savannen emphasizes fair trade and sustainability, offering unique products inspired by nature and ethnic cultures that fit perfectly into a modern Nordic home.
