Zulu Baskets

Ilala baskets are among the most famous handmade baskets in the world. Their intricate designs, geometric shapes and traditional meanings make them a beautiful choice. The type of basket varies from region to region and the purpose for which the basket is to be used. It can take up to a month to produce a medium-sized basket which will be unique in size, shape, pattern, weave and colour.

The baskets are made from natural elements and traditional fibers, sourced from nature, and assembled by skilled weavers, using extract of dyes obtained from natural sources such as roots, bark, fruits and berries, leaves.

These baskets are a major source of employment for many women in Africa and provide income to rural areas while keeping craft traditions alive.

The Zulu baskets are made from natural illala palm leaves that are hand-dyed with natural roots, bark and fruit, they are stripped, cleaned and spun by hand - handmade in South Africa.
